Fur 11.03.10
SARC have recently stepped up the campaign against fur in the south by holding protests against the use of rabbit fur imported from China to make 'ships cats' collectable models, sold by Nauticalia.

SARC activists recently held protests at the Portsmouth and Lymington branches of Nauticalia, a chain of shops that amongst other Nautical items; sells model cats made from real rabbit fur. At the Portsmouth store protesters informed the public about what these cats are made of and collected signatures for our petition. As usual people expressed their disgust and disbelief at these vile novelty items and stated that they would never buy them.

At the Lymington branch activists received a warm welcome from one of the employees who stated that they she is against the use of fur for these items. She handed one of the protesters a leaflet that Nauticalia have specifically produced to try and defend the use of real fur for these 'ships cats'.

In this leaflet They claim that the rabbit fur is “a by-product of sustenance food farming” in a rural province of China. They claim the rabbits are not intensively reared. Nauticalia state “we do not feel that it is our place to make a judgement on the minority argument against the eating of meat or use of animal hides for clothing”

But fur farming is hardly ever a by product of the meat industry, something that we would be against anyway, and it doesn't change the fact that fur farming is illegal in the UK, therefore we shouldn't import fur from any other countries. From what SARC have heard, talking to a wide range of people in the general public, it is not a minority argument against using animal hides for clothing, the majority of people today are strongly opposed to fur.

Nauticalia refuse to respond to emails regarding these issues, which just goes to show that they can't really justify the sale of these disgusting items!
